History
Story of two girls
The story begins in Brazil, where we (Luz and Aurora) were born, after our parents left Spain to devote themselves to missions in South America.
From a young age we were involved in our parent’s activities and were made aware that not all children are as lucky as we were. We also realized that it didn’t take much to put a smile on someone’s face, instill hope in their hearts, or relieve their suffering in some small way.
Although we hadn’t planned to dedicate ourselves to charity work, volunteering experiences in Chile and Argentina made us think again. When we realized that we had the power to change a life—and that by doing so we ourselves were profoundly changed—we knew we wanted to make that a pivotal element of our lives.
In 2006, Luz accepted an invitation to work in Cali, Colombia with La Familia en Acción and FUNDESIA, a foundation that provides basic education to 1,400 children in the Cauca area.
Upon arriving in Colombia, we fell in love with a country full of life and warmth, but one scarred by a host of social problems. We were overwhelmed by the misery and social decomposition we saw around us and the disastrous effect it had on the children growing up in the middle of it.
Through our work with disadvantaged children, we experienced both the exhilaration of making a difference in someone’s life and the frustration of feeling so small in comparison to such a large problem.
All we knew for sure was that we wanted to help.
Keep on reading to find out what we discovered in Colombia and what we’re doing about it.
